Dear students,

Culture is also important in our journey through the English language. On the 29th November, the Americans celebrate this important holiday: THANKSGIVING. So, I decided to mark this event with a reading comprehension exercise.
First, you can read the text and know all about this American tradition on the following link:
Thanksgiving history

Then you can check your comprehension in this Quiz

Have fun and learn more about the American culture!!! šŸ˜‰

WILL OR BE GOING TO?

Good work!!!

šŸ˜‰

Dear students,

We have been talking about the future and the way we can express it with WILL or BE GOING TO.

Therefore, here is the explanation:

  • Ā GOING TO:

– when you are sure about what is going to happen (quando se tem certeza do que vai acontecer), a decision made (uma decisĆ£o jĆ” tomada).

SituationĀ 1

–Ā What color are you going to paint your kitchen?Ā (De que cor vais pintar a tua cozinha?)

–Ā IĀ“m going to paint it white. (Vou pintĆ”-la de branco.)

SituationĀ 2

–Ā What are you going to do after class tonight?Ā (O que vais fazer apĆ³s a aula hoje Ć  noite?)

–Ā IĀ“m going to stop by at my uncleĀ“s house to pick up some books.Ā (Vou passar em casa do meu tio para ir buscar alguns livros.)

– to make predictions about what’s going to happen (para se fazer previsƵes sobre o que vai acontecer).

I think the concert is going to be good.Ā (Acho que o show vai ser bom.)

I think itĀ“s going to rain.Ā (Acho que vai chover.)

  • WILL:

– with expressions like (com expressƵes como)Ā ā€œI THINKā€, ā€œMAYBEā€, ā€œIĀ“M SUREā€.

I think youĀ“ll do well on the test.Ā (Acho que a prova te vai correr bem.)

Maybe IĀ“ll go to the movies tonight.Ā (Talvez eu vĆ” ao cinema hoje Ć  noite.)

IĀ“m sure everything will be all right.Ā (Tenho certeza de que tudo ficarĆ” bem.)

– to offer help to do something (para se oferecer a fazer algo).

The phoneĀ“s ringing!Ā (O telefone estĆ” a tocar.)Ā DonĀ“t worry, IĀ“ll get it.Ā (NĆ£o se preocupe, eu atendo.)

– decisions made at the time of speaking (quando se resolve fazer algo na hora da fala).

–Ā Sir, will you have red wine or white wine?Ā (O senhor vai tomar vinho tinto ou branco?)

– Mmm, IĀ“ll have red wine.Ā (Mmm, aceito o vinho tinto.)

Well, I hope this tip will help you.

Here are some exercises about this topic:

If you have any doubts or questions, post your comments here and Iā€™ll answer themĀ ASAPĀ (as soon as possible)!

Take care and hope to hear from you soon!

In order to practice these verb tenses you can do the exercises in the links below:

Sustainability explained in animation. Very cool!!!!

(Note: If you feel the need for subtitles, you can activate the “CC” in the video and translate the subtitles into Portuguese.)

Enjoy and learn!!!

šŸ™‚

Dear students,

We have been talking about protecting the planet and the small things we can do to make the difference. Watch this video that shows how the Government of Brazil is disrespecting the environment and the people from Amazonia… Disgusting!!!

I have no words to express the feeling of revolt this brings to me…

You can learn a little more about the people that is going to be homeless with the construction of a dam in the river Xingu, Amazonia.

šŸ˜¦

Dear students,

Today I talked about smoking in class. Besides all the information there is, here is a video that shows how smoking is bad for you…

That is really awful…

Don’t smoke!!! For your own health!
